Degrading the quality of a product is one thing but it’s another thing to pass on food items which are entirely fake. In a new scandal it is being reported that now China is flooding fake eggs into India. The internet is flooded with videos and news about fake eggs. This was considered so far as just a science experiment but now with cases emerging in Kerala and Tamil Nadu of the market being flooded with fake eggs it is becoming a new threat to the Indian health. Since 2003, Chinese workers have been able to replicate chicken eggs to a surprising degree of detail. The shell is made of shaped calcium carbonate, reported the Beijing Media Network. Other ingredients include starch, resin, and cellulose coagulants for the egg white, and edible pigment additives for the yolk. These eggs are many times cheaper than the original eggs. (a great way for sellers to make profit) Earlier as well China was under the radar for food items which have been reported as being fake. Starting from fake Rice Noodles, Fake Milk, Pork meat which glows, Walnuts being filled with cement and other material, Rat meat being passed off as beef, Fake Plastic rice, Exploding Watermelons etc.

Eggs with Plastic interior

The fake eggs have made their way into the uptown supermarkets in many places. These eggs have a plastic coating inside the shell which when burnt gives off fumes similar to plastic burning. These eggs are visually very similar to normal eggs. On closer examination these eggs are rough to touch and are hard to break. When boiled the yolk of these eggs turn hard like rubber. There have been reports of these boiled yolks bouncing on the table when dropped. It’s not a surprise that these eggs do not taste like normal eggs.

How to find a Fake Egg

fake-eggsIts pretty hard to differentiate between the fake and a normal egg when you buy them, but there are few ways which can be employed before you eat them to know which one is fake. Initially if the egg looks too perfect then suspicion should be raised. By knocking on the egg if you hear a hollow sound, there are very high chances that the egg you just bought might be fake. Upon breaking the fake egg the yellow yolk and the white portion of the egg mixes instantly giving off a yellowish mixture as compared to the normal egg which when broken has separate layers of white and the yellow yolk. Another way to differentiate is after boiling, the fake egg after boiling hardens into a rubbery substance, the white bends easily without breaking and the yellow yolk turns into a sort of a rubber ball which in some instances is capable of bouncing on a table.

It takes 2 cents to manufacture a fake egg

As of now the estimated cost of manufacturing these fake eggs is considered to be around 2 cents and an average person can make up to 1200-1500 fake eggs in a day. The toughest part in the manufacturing of the fake eggs is the construction of the egg shell. Usually it takes around 10 minutes to make a perfect egg shell using a calcium mixture and applying it evenly into a mould. There have been reports where people are taking up classes in china to lean how to make fake eggs with the cost of the course being estimated around 100 $.
