On August 10 photos of the trio appeared in the newspapers and a reporter from Kashmir uploaded the photos of terrorists killed in the encounter and Yusuf recognized his kin. Families the approached SSP Rajouri, who contacted his counterpart and the investigation was started. On August 13, a police team from Shopian reached Rajouri, recorded the statements of the parents/relatives.

Samples of Mohd Yusuf his wife Malika Khatoon, Sabar Hussain his wife Shammim Akhter and Sift Jaan & Faizan , mother & brother of Abrar were also taken for DNA matching with the slain militants. Meanwhile, families also approached SSP, DDC Rajouri and Lt Governor for the possession of the bodies.
