Delhi (The Stellar News) Saksham Kalia: Kamalpreet Kaur who decided to pursue her dreams as a sportsperson because she was not doing well in academics, reached in Olympics 2020 final. She finished on 6th position and made country confident that she will definitely won medal for country in next olympic.
As the journey of a sportsperson is full of challenges and struggles especially when you are living in a small village of Punjab, same was with Kamalpreet. Kamalpreet Kaur was previously a Short put thrower but after a suggestion from her coach at the sports authority of India centre in Badal, she decided to switch to discus throwing.
The 25-year-old climbed up the ranks with impressive performances in the national and international events. The discus thrower won a bronze in the junior nationals in Bangalore in 2013. From there on, she hasn’t looked back. She finished sixth in the 2017 World University Games. At the senior level, Kamalpreet finished fifth in the 2019 Asian Athletics Championships in Doha.
Another reason of getting into sports was escaping from marriage, as in a small village, girls are always in pressure to marry at a very early age. Coming from a humble family, where dreaming of playing for India is like unacceptable. But Kamalpreet’s father was very supportive for her but mother wasn’t. Her father took loan for her so that she can pursue in her sports.
Mother was afraid of hostel life that how can Kamalpreet adapt that Atmosphere. But the dedication and determination made her more firm. The challenges from undercooked Rotis to unavailability of funds to buy equipments. She faught against all odds and made that possible of being in that situation where millions of people dream to be.
Now some interesting changes after kamalpreet reached into finals is that the village where only 2 or 3 buses go in a day, people are showing interest in going to that village. Everyone is feeling proud that kamalpreet made to finals in her first Olympic.
