SRI LANKA ECONOMIC CRISIS: OPPOSITION REJECTS PRESIDENT’s CALL OF UNITY AS CRISIS ESCALATES, INDIA PLAYING MAJOR ROLE

Sri Lanka (The Stellar News) Saksham Kalia: Sri Lanka is suffering from its worst economic crisis after the 1948 crisis in British times. Sri Lankan people are protesting against their incumbent government as shortages of food, gas, and oil hits the whole country. Considering the intensity of the situation, Sri Lanka’s President call for the unity of opposition and government but the opposition refused it as the crisis escalates in the country.

Every member of Sri Lanka’s cabinet except the president and his elder brother, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, resigned late Sunday. Sri Lanka has over 1trillion dollars of debt from which majorly 10% of debt belongs to China. Sri Lanka asked China to extend the date of repayment of the loan, but China refused it. Another main reason for the Sri Lanka food crisis is the implementation of organic farming laws in the whole country because of which the productivity of food crops reduced to a large extent.

An emergency health situation has been declared in Sri Lanka from Tuesday because of the severe drug shortage in the country. This decision was announced after an emergency general committee meeting of the country’s Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) to discuss the imposition of the emergency law and the severe drug shortage, the Daily Mirror reported.

People are facing problems for their survival and the country is in major chaos. India is also playing a major role in this crisis. India delivered 40,000 MT of diesel to Sri Lanka to help ease the power crisis in the island country, which is witnessing acute power cuts.

India has extended US 500 million oil line of credit to Sri Lanka. Today’s supply was the 4th such consignment to the inflation-hit country. In the past 50 days, India’s total fuel supply to Sri Lanka stands at 200,000 MT.

“More fuel supplies delivered by #India to #SriLanka! A consignment of 40,000 MT of diesel under #Indian assistance through Line of Credit of $500 mn was handed over by High Commissioner to Hon’ble Energy Minister Gamini Lokuge in #Colombo today,” tweeted the Indian embassy in Colombo.

“This is the fourth consignment under the LoC. Fuel delivered from #IndianWells to people of #SriLanka in last 50 days is about 2,00,000T,” it added.
