According to Jabalpur’s Gohalpur police station area’s Superintendent of Police, Siddarth Bahuguna, the fire started at New Life Multi-speciality Hospital close to Damoh Naka in the afternoon.

Jabalpur’s fire officer, Kusharga Thakur, claimed that four fire engines and about 40 firemen went to the scene after receiving a call at around 2:15 pm. According to the reports, a generator next to the hospital caught fire as a result of voltage change. It first devoured the hospital’s own pharmacy before blocking the hospital’s main entrance and exit. The ISBT fire station was the closest one, located roughly 500 metres from the hospital, and the fire-fighters arrived there relatively immediately.

Seven patients, the most of whom were unconscious and have significant burn injuries, were rescued by the fire squad from the hospital. “The hospital had gotten a fire safety plan authorised, but they had not installed a static installation after which they would be given a fire NOC. Regarding this, a notice was also issued to the hospital recently”, Thakur said.

Shivraj Singh Chauhan, the CM of Madhya Pradesh, offered an ex gratia of Rs. 5 lakh for each of the deceased person’s family.
