Guwahati (The Stellar News): In giving a thrust to Assam government’s commitment to empower the women, State chief minister Sarbananada Sonowal yesterday launched the Orunodoi, which is termed as a biggest direct benefit transfer scheme of the region at a function held at Numali Jalah parade ground at Amingaon in North Guwahati. The scheme has been rolled out with 17 lakh odd families as beneficiaries at present as the government would transfer Rs 830 per month to the account of one of the female members of the family under the scheme.
After the elections of BTC, the number of beneficiaries would stand out to be 22 lakh families as the state government would need Rs 2400 crore every year for the scheme. “Assam government is committed to build a socio-economically oriented women development narrative as the Orunodoi scheme would serve as a big fillip to the empowerment of women,” said Sonowal while addressing the gathering. He commented that based on the doctrine of Sabka Saath, Sabka Bikash and Sabka Viswas, the government continues to work for the socio-economic and academic development of the people.
Stating that without the help and cooperation of all sections in the society, no government program can succeed, Sonowal urged upon the people including the journalists to extend cooperation and maintain close watch on performances of the government. He also mentioned about various schemes covering widow’s pension, women empowerment, girl’s education, wage compensation for tea garden women with several others.
State finance, health, education etc minister Himanta Biswa Sarma while speaking on the occasion claimed that though the Orunodoi initiatives, the government has cleared the decks for ensuring secured monthly income to the beneficiaries of 22 lakh families. He added that under the scheme widow, unmarried women, divorcee, dibyang would get special preference. On the occasion, in presence of Parliamentarian Queen Oja, State minister Sanjay Kisan, legislators namely Suman Haripriya, Satyabrata Kalita, Pranab Kalita, Rakibuddin Ahmed, top government officials including Samir Sinha, Shyam Jagannathan, with others, Sonowal and Sarma ceremoniously handed over sanction letters to some beneficiaries.
