Bitter-sweet victory for Congress in Madhya Pradesh Civic polls

Madhya Pradesh (The Stellar News): After a long period of 18 years, Congress managed to grab the mayoral post with Jagat Bahadur Singh Annu as the new mayor, while defeating BJP mayor candidate Dr. Jitendra Namdar with a great margin of more than 44,000 votes on Sunday. Even though Jabalpur Municipal Corporation has a Congress mayor, more BJP corporators have won. In fact, Congress has fewer corporators than it did in the last civic polls. 44 wards out 79 have won by BJP candidates, Congress won 26, while 7 were in the favour of independent candidates. In the previous elections Congress had won 29 wards and BJP gained two seats in last elections.
The elections were held on July 6, 2022 and 11 candidates contested the election for the mayoral post. Main competition was between Congress and BJP. CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan visited the city twice to campaign for Namdar while PCC Chief and Co-founder CM Kamal Nath also campaigned for Singh. Congress raised the issue of difficulties faced by the locals during the Covid-19 period and the issue of fake Remdesivir injections in the city, which managed to impress the voters. BJP Candidates main issue was inclusive development and he was supported by RSS and group of city doctors. Last time Congress won the mayoral post was in 1999. Vishwanath Dubey was elected mayor but he resigned from the post and contested the Jabalpur MP seat on a Congress ticket and lost.
