With the commissioning of Vikrant, India joined the limited league of countries which has the capability to built indigenous aircrafts above 440000 tonne weight. The reason why this special aircraft got the name “Vikrant” is not familiar to a lot of people. Some don’t even know the meaning of Vikrant.

So, explaining first the word Vikrant means “Courageous” and this word also has a mention in Bhagvad Gita where some soldiers of Pandavas were categorised as Vikrant. The categorisation was classified as someone who cannot be won by others. So the Aircraft carrier is named “Vikrant”. The newly made aircraft is advanced replica of old INS Vikrant which has served India for 36 years and had played a key role in defeating Pakistan in 1971 war as both the name and patent number is same of both the aircrafts.
