“The flying Sikh” Milkha Singh passed away at the age of 91

Chandigarh (The Stellar News) Ridhi Bhandari: Milkha Singh popularly known as “the flying sikh” of India died due to corona last night. At the age of 91 he passed away. He was tested positive of corona on May 19 and he was home isolated after he was asymptomatic.Next, on May 24 the athlete was admitted to ICU of Mohali’s Fortis Hospital due to “Covid-19 pneumonia”. He was then moved to PGIMER in Chandigarh on June 3. He died five days after his wife Nirmal Milkha Singh died due to corona at 85.

“It is the extreme sadness that we would like to inform you that Milkha Singh Ji passed away at 11:30 on the 18th of June 2021” his family announced in a statement.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi showed sorrow by posting a tweet. “In the passing away of Shri Milkha Singh Ji, we have lost a colossal sportsperson, who captured the nation’s imagination and had a special place in the hearts of countless Indians. His inspiring personality endeared himself to millions. Anguished by his passing away”. “The flying Sikh” won four Asian gold medals and finished fourth in the 400 m final at the 1960, Rome Olympics. His life story was filmed in 2013 Bollywood movie “Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. Milkha singh was the independent India’s first sporting superstar.
