Toilets in home mandatory for obtaining passport

Now the residents of Katni district in Madhya Pradesh have to prove that they have a toilet in their homes if they want to obtain the Indian Passport. Last week the district administration issued a directive under the “Swachh Bharat Mission”. The Superintendent of Police of Katni district Mr. Gaurav Tiwari said that after a person has applied for the Indian Passport his or her Police verification is required and under the new directive a certificate issued by the Municipal Officer in Urban Areas and Gram Panchayat Officer in the Rural belt would be required certifying that the person has a toilet at home, before the NOC could be issued.

The Panchayat and rural development departments of Madhya Pradesh are authorised under the Swachh Bharat Mission to formulate rules to prevent open defecation in their areas. A similar initiative has been undertaken in the Khargone district where the school children use the words “Toilet hai!” – (I have a toilet at home); to mark their presence in the classrooms.
