The newborn baby, who was found to be alive just 30 minutes before the funeral after being declared dead by the Safdarjung Hospital staffers on Sunday, died a day later due to heart collapse.
“The baby was brought back to the hospital on Sunday. “He weighed only 4.5 kg. At 4.15 pm on Monday, his heart collapsed and he died,” Dr. AK Rai, Medical Superintendent, Safdarjung Hospital, said. “A committee has been set up by the hospital to look into the allegations of negligence. Its report should be out by Tuesday,” he further added. Earlier when the child was found alive and brought to the hospital, Dr. Rai had said: “The woman had delivered a 22-week-old premature baby. As per the WHO guidelines, babies born before 22 weeks and weighing less than 500 gms are not considered deliveries. The baby was motionless.” The infant survived for 30 hours in the neo-natal ICU before being declared dead the second time. Meanwhile, a case of negligence has been filed against the hospital.
