Nitish Kumar gives his resignation to Bihar’s Governor

Amid the political standoff in Bihar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar resigned today evening shattering the anti-BJP Grand Alliance which came to power with an overwhelming majority in 2015. He met Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi at the Raj Bhavan and submitted his resignation. The decision to quit was taken by Kumar at a meeting of JDU MLAs today evening. The MLAs reportedly endorsed his decision to quit. Talking to media after his resignation, Mr. Kumar said his decision to step down is in the interest of Bihar. 

“We made the alliance and accepted him (Nitish Kumar) as the Chief Minister. We have no problem with that. But if he decides not to carry on with this responsibility, then it is his choice,” Lalu said

The JD(U) and Mr. Nitish Kumar have been insisting that Mr. Lallu Prasad Yadav come clean on the accusations in public which are politically being construed as the JD(U)’s demand for his resignation.

“Ever since the corruption charges were levelled against RJD leaders, we have been asking them to at least explain those charges. We also met Tejashwi and told him that the image that is being created, he should clarify all that. But this did not happen. The situation got so worse that it became difficult for me to work. We had followed the Gathbandhan Dharma and had tried to protect it. But now my conscience does not allow me to continue,’ said Kumar.

His resignation has been accepted by the Governor of Bihar.

The resignation of Mr. Nitish Kumar came after RJP Chief Mr. Lalu Prasad Yadav ruled out the stepping down of his son Tejashwi.
