Opposition Protests over GST rates hike, Parliament adjourned till 2 pm

Delhi (The Stellar News): On 19 July 2022, Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned till 2 pm as the members of the opposition protested over increase in GST on eatable goods and rise in prices.
The house assembled at 11 am, members of Congress, Trinamool Congress, DMK and others entered the House carrying placards over the imposition of GST on new items. They raised “Gabbar Singh Strikes Again” slogans against BJP government.
Speaker Om Birla said that carrying of placards inside the House is against the Parliamentary rules and appealed the members to go back to their seats. He said, since the House is discussing the farmer’s issue, the members should participate in it.
Birla also said,“You carry rules book but don’t follow rules. The rules prohibit carrying placards here but you are carrying them. You raise farmers issue outside the House but not inside. You raise the issue of price rise outside the House but not inside. In the last session you did not participate in the debate on price rise. This is not good”.
When the leaders of AAP and Congress pressed for an immediate discussion on the price rise, birla helplessly adjourned the House till 2 pm without transacting any business.
Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge and other leaders requested VP under rule 267 which means that the business of the day can be set aside to take up the issue listed by them which was then rejected by Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu. “On price rise and other issues, we can have a discussion. On that I have no problem,” Naidu said willing to discuss the issue but on later date.
Opposition sticking to their views asked, “We will raise the same when the House reconvenes. Why is the government afraid about holding the discussion”.
The protest also came after the Rajya Sabha secretariat issued a circular saying no protest or demonstration will be allowed inside Parliament complex. The opposition had protested against the issued circular, saying the voice of democracy is being throttled.
