GOVT APPROVES PROPOSAL OF AMENDING LEGAL MARRIAGE AGE OF WOMEN TO 21

Delhi (The Stellar News) Saksham Kalia: Indian Government on wednesday, approves the proposal of amending the legal marriage age of women to 21. One year later the Prime minister has made an announcement of increasing the marriage age of women to 21, cabinet approves the proposal in parliament.

Acting on this, Indian government will bring ordinance in parliament and will introduce an amendment to the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, and consequently bring amendments to the Special Marriage Act and personal laws such as the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955.

With this, the legal age for both men and women will be 21. Wednesday’s clearance is based on recommendations submitted to Niti Aayog in December 2020 by the Centre’s task force, headed by Jaya Jaitly, which was constituted to examine “matters pertaining to age of motherhood, imperatives of lowering MMR (Maternal Mortality Rate), improvement of nutritional levels and related issues”.
