OBIHIRO — Two police officers in Obihiro, Hokkaido, have been arrested on suspicion of drunk driving. Hokkaido prefectural police said the two officers—Issei Otaka, 20, and Kazuma Tomoda, 20—were attached to a division to crack down on drunk arriving, Fuji TV reported Monday.

According to police, the two officers attended a barbecue with friends at a dry river bed from 10 p.m. on Saturday. After about two hours, they drove to a karaoke bar in the town of Otofuke. The pair have admitted drinking canned beer and chuhai over the course of five hours.

The two left the karaoke bar at around 4:20 a.m. Sunday with Otaka driving the vehicle intoxicated and Tomoda as the passenger. Police said their car was then involved in a collision with another vehicle at an intersection on National Route 241, but they kept going back to their police dorm.

However, the license plate and bumper of their car fell off in the collision. In an effort to retrieve the license plate, the two intoxicated officers drove separate vehicles back to the collision scene. Otaka was arrested at the scene, while Tomoda was picked up when he returned to the dorm.

The driver of the other car involved in the collision was not injured, police said.
