Cancer surviving social worker honoured with Sati Sadhani Award

Guwahati (The Stellar News), Nava Thakuria: Noted Assamese educationist Minoti Borthakur, who defeated cancer to live for social works, was conferred Veerangana Sati Sadhani Award  2020 recently in a program held at Dhakuakhana in eastern part of the State. State chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal presented the award honouring the brave lady who won the 27 years long battle against the deadly disease. Highlighting the State government’s decision to constitute Sati Sadhani award and also set up an university at Golaghat in memorial tributes to the valour & bravery of Sati Sadhani, Sonowal stressed on the need for the younger generation  to build their personalities through academics and educational pursuits. He also announced an amount  of Rs  10 lakh for erecting a statue of Sati Sadhani at Dhakuakhana.

Mentionable is that the last queen of Chutia dynasty, Sati Sadhani played a prominent role in the fight against the invaders in around 1524 and finally sacrificed her life by jumping from the top of Chandragiri hills near Sadiya in  eastern Assam.  Soon after her marriage to a relatively weak king Nityapal, Sati Sadhani had to face hardships in different spheres but she did not surrender and went on facing the challenges. Sonowal also called everyone to realise the tremendous willpower and mental strength shown by Ms Borthakur in her fight against cancer saying ‘her   example   should be  emulated by everyone in overcoming challenges in life through willpower’. Responding the goodwill, Ms Borthakur shared her struggling experiences and endeavour to educate the cancer patients about ways to deal with their trauma and sufferings.

Mentioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s motto  of ‘sabka   sath,  sabka vikash, sabka viswas’, Sonowal laid emphasis on equal development to all sections. He reminded that soon after coming to power in 2016, the BJP led government in Dispur held meetings with 70 communities from all corners of Assam to prepare a roadmap for their equal development and steps were taken to preserve the culture,language, literature of all communities, irrespective of their population. In presence of State cultural affairs minister Naba Kumar Doley, agriculture minister Atul Bora, Parliamentarian Pradan Barua, Legislator Ranoj Pegu with other dignitaries, Sonowal called upon the youths to take up education, sports and cultural activities with true spirits and examples set by many great Assamese personalities like Sati Sadhani who had shown an act of unbelievable bravery.
