Guwahati (The Stellar News): The rulingĀ Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) is fighting for 92 seats (out of 126 ) leaving the remaining
constituencies to its political allies in the forthcoming State legislative assembly elections scheduled for 27 March, 1 and 6 April. The saffron party has continued its tie with Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), but replaced Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) with United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) for the polls. Itās nominees won in 60 assembly constituencies in 2016 elections, where AGP succeeded in 14 seats. Now with the Congress led grand alliance BPF won in 12 constituencies. The opposition Congress party
(which won 26 seats last time) has sealed pre-poll electoral bond with All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF succeeded in 13
constituencies in 2016 elections) along with Anchalik Gana Morcha and the Left parties.
State chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal is seeking re-election from Majuli assembly constituency in the middle of mighty Brahmaputra river. Powerful minister Himanta Biswa Sarma continues to be the candidate for Jalukbari seat. Partyās Assam unit presidentĀ Ranjeet kr Dass is fighting for PatacharkuchiĀ constituency leaving his seat (Sorbhog) to Sankar Chandra Das. Assembly speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami is seeking reelection from Jorhat seat, where ministers Chandra Mohan Patowary (Dharmapur), Siddhartha Bhattacharjee (Guwahati East), Bhadesh Kalita (Rongiya), Piyush Hazarika (Jagiroad-SC), Naba Kumar Doley (Dhakuakhana-ST), Ranjeet Dutta (Behali), Parimal Suklabaidya (Dholai-SC), etcĀ also put their candidatures as sitting legislators.
Present and former legislators namelyĀ Angoorlata Deka (Batadrowa), Mrinal Saikia (Khumtai), Padma Hazarika (Sootia), Prasanta Phukan (Dibrugarh), Atul Bora (Dispur), Suman Haripriya (Hajo), Bhaskar Sarma (Margherita), Ashok Anand Singhal (Dhekiajuli), Narayan Deka (Borkhetri), Ranoj Pegu (Dhemaji-ST), Bhuban Pegu (Jonai-ST), Bolin Chetia (Sadiya), Ramakanta Deori (Mariganon),Ā Jayanta Malla Barua (Nalbari), Rupak Sarma (Nagaon), Jitu Goswami (Barhampur), etc have stepped their electoral activities.
Newly inducted Ajanta Neog (Golaghat) and Gautam Roy (Katigorah), both of whom were ministers in Congress veteran Tarun Gogoiās cabinet), Paramananda Rajbongshi (Sipajhar), former Asom Sahitya Sabha president, Amiya Bhuyan (Bihpuria), former AASU leader are also included in the list of saffron nominees.
