As municipal elections are approaching, the streets of Hoshiarpur have transformed into the battlefield of posters, banners and hoardings. They have not even left the walls of the religious places for publicity. It raises an important question that is a candidate has genuinely done work for the people and maintained good relations among the individuals, is it necessary to do such expensive publicity?
Posters undoubtedly help create awareness in the public and provides employment to designers, printers, flex makers and installation workers. However, it shifts the focus from performance to publicity. Instead of allowing their work to speak many candidates are busy displaying their posters showing up their faces. Streets, electricity polls, walls are filled with the campaign materials.
Another concern is of the environment. These posters, banners, plastic sheets will last for no longer then three to four weeks and afterwards becoming burden on the concerned authorities for cleaning the city. How can we win on the cost of environment?
Candidate who has maintained good relations with the residents of the respective ward, listened to them, have constantly done work for the ward and the city will certainly get good support whether he/she has done publicity or not because the work speaks more than the words.
My suggestion is that one should not vote for that candidate whose face appears more on the walls but for that candidate who has actually do some practical work, who has actually put efforts for the development of the respective ward. The candidates should also understand that the walls of religious places are not meant for publicity purpose. They should respect the dignity of the place.
